Regulating the body to regulate emotion

Abstract

Everyday behaviors like eating, moving, sleeping, and breathing are among the most widely recommended stress-coping strategies by leading health organizations, yet they lack integration into our understanding of and theory on emotion regulation. I review a wide swath of research from diverse fields such as health psychology, clinical psychology, psychiatry, exercise science, nutrition science, and neuroscience to show that these behaviors can be an effective way to reduce emotional disorders and facilitate long-term regulated emotion.
